Mount Horrocks, 2022

Mount Horrocks 'Cordon Cut' Clare Valley Riesling, South Australia

The Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut Vineyard is located at Auburn, close to the Mount Horrocks Cellar Door (formerly the Auburn Railway Station) and is planted to riesling. At an elevation of 340 metres it is a warmer site and ideal for producing this richer, more concentrated style of wine. 'Cordon Cut' refers to a complex, highly risky process requiring both skill and experience, which involves cutting the vine canes when the grapes are ripe, allowing the remaining fruit to concentrate and raisin naturally on the vine. This results in intense flavour and richness. The decision to pick is made by Stephanie, and is based on the appearance and taste of the fruit, and her intimate knowledge of the process.

Several passes through the vineyard are needed to ensure that only the most botrytised berries are selected. The wine is a blend of 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. Chateau d`Yquem is often described as the greatest sweet wine in the world. After centuries of family ownership, Yquem was finally sold in acrimonious circumstances to Louis Vuitton-Moët-Hennessy in 1999. However, its former owner and director Alexandre de Lur-Saluce remains in charge. Yquem is located on the highest hill in Sauternes and enjoys the best growing conditions in the whole appellation. The 110-hectare vineyard is planted with 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Chateau d'Yquem, 2000

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

Only 25,000 bottles of Yquem were made in this very tough Sauternes vintage. A truly valiant effort from this fine property.

"The millennial 2000 Chateau d’Yquem is a valiant effort in one of the most challenging Sauternes vintages in recent memory. The 2000 is quite deep in colour. The nose is crisp and well-defined but not the most complex, as you would expect from a truly challenging growing season in Sauternes. It is pleasant in its own way with delicate scents of tangerine, yellow flowers and Mirabelle. The palate is well-balanced with marmalade tinged opening. I like the acidity here, an Yquem with good race, although it does feel a little tapered toward the finish.

Yquem is without doubt, one of the world's finest sweet wine producers, of whom Robert Parker comments: "There is no other wine in the world like it, and there is no other luxury wine that can possibly justify its price as much as Yquem. The remarkable amount of painstaking labor necessary to produce the nectar known as Yquem is almost impossible to comprehend."

Reviews: A golden, straw hue. The nose is predictable and linear compared to the other Yquem's that I have tasted. White flowers, acacia, rather like a sweet Auslese! The palate is lively, rich, moderate acidity.
