Messias, 2015

Messias Clássico Garrafeira Tinto, Bairrada
***92 Points- The Wine Advocate***

A staff favourite, this richly textured red wine comes from the up and coming Bairrada region in Portugal. It is made by the indigenous grape Baga, the flagship variety of the region, aged for 24 months in 50% new French barriques. Baga's small berries and thick skins make for intense, tannic wines. This wine is a strong representation of the Bairrada region and the Baga grape.

Tasting Notes
Intense ruby colour with garnet highlights. On the nose the wine shows Atlantic characteristics, including balsamic nuances of resin and cedar, as well as iodine and salty sensations. It has a large structure on the palate, with excellent tannins, and a high potential for ageing.

*** 90 Points Robert Parker*** Clearance Offer | Was £22.95 | Now £10

Valdoeiro is the family estate of Messias in the region of Bairrada. The 2015 Reserva Quinta do Valdoeiro is a 70/25 blend of Baga and Touriga Nacional, with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has aged for 18 months in 60% used French oak and comes in at 13.1% alcohol.

Tasting Notes Intense ruby coloured wine. Fine and complex aroma, where you can discover fruits of the forest reminiscent of blueberries and cassis, punctuated by mineral sensations of pottery and iodine-like saline. The forest bottom dominates the entire race experience. In the mouth it has a strong structure. However, its silky tannins and refreshing acidity suggest a wine with enormous aging potential.

White Wine
18 pts- Revista de Vinhos
Special Offer | Was £38.95 | Now £29.95
Offer ends 31st July

This wine is typically crafted from indigenous grape varieties native to the Bairrada region, such as Bical, Maria Gomes (also known as Fernão Pires), and Arinto. These grapes contribute to the wine's distinctive flavour profile and aromatic characteristics. Unusually for a white wine, the age has added complexity to this wine reminiscing of great aged white Riojas.

Tasting Notes
Aroma with unique, incredible complexity, ripe yellow plum, honey, some fresh herbs, salty background with phosphorus nuances. Medium body, ample structure supported by good acidity, crispy periphery, lively, stirred wine, quite expressive presence in the mouth, some freshness that contradicts the expectation created from the aroma.

As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Quinta do Poco do Lobo, 1995

Quinta Poço do Lobo - Cabernet, Bairrada | Excellent Provenance
** 91 Points - Robert Parker **

The 1995 Quinta Poço do Lobo from caves St Joao are an exceptional experience at a nice price. Plus, the provenance is perfect—re-released direct from the winery.

The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva Quinta do Poço do Lobo is unoaked and comes in at 13.5% alcohol. This Reserva has more power than the regular reds and much riper fruit. It is bigger and fresher in every respect. Intense and powerful, this is nuanced by cassis and red fruits. It ends with a big finish. There are some typical nuances of aging Cab too. So, while it is fresh for its age, it hardly tastes like a young red. Many will consider that a good thing.
