Description

A rare library release drawn directly from the historic cellars of Caves São João, this 1987 Frei João has been matured under perfect storage conditions at the producer for nearly four decades prior to release. It represents an unbroken line of provenance, offering absolute confidence in authenticity, condition and cellar integrity.

Released only after long-term ageing in ideal underground cellars, this wine provides a unique opportunity to experience fully mature Bairrada exactly as the producer intended it to evolve — slowly, naturally, and without interruption.

Appearance:

Deep garnet with brick-orange rim, showing full maturity.

Nose:

Complex and tertiary, with dried blackcurrant, cherry and plum layered with cedar, tobacco, leather and graphite. Subtle notes of forest floor and dried herbs emerge with air.

Palate:

Silky and fully integrated, with softened tannins and fresh, balancing acidity. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury plum, cigar box and earthy spice are carried in a seamless, harmonious structure.

Finish:

Long, savoury and composed, with lingering notes of dried fruit, tobacco and cedar.

Decanting:
Stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Open with care as older corks may be fragile, and strain if necessary to remove any cork fragments. Decant gently just before serving at 16–18°C. Best enjoyed in a large-bowled glass to release full aromatic complexity.

About the Producer:

Frei João is one of the historic labels of Caves São João, a benchmark Portuguese producer founded in 1920 with a defining role in both Bairrada and Dão winemaking traditions. The estate built its reputation on structured, age-worthy wines shaped by acidity, restraint and classical methods rather than immediate richness.

Caves São João is particularly renowned for retaining extensive library stocks of its finest vintages, carefully cellared at the winery for decades. This commitment to long-term ageing ensures exceptional provenance and consistency, with wines released only when deemed ready by the producer. This 1987 Frei João is a direct expression of that philosophy — a perfectly preserved bottle now revealing its full maturity and complexity.
