Description

The Barbera d'Asti DOC 1987 Bersano is a classic red wine from Piedmont, Italy. Produced by Bersano, it reflects the traditional Barbera d’Asti style of the late 1980s: vibrant, food-friendly, and focused on acidity and regional character rather than heavy oak influence. Made primarily from Barbera grapes grown in the Asti hills, this wine represents a period when Piedmontese reds balanced rustic charm with increasing refinement.

Tasting notes:

The 1987 vintage is now fully mature and showing developed tertiary characteristics. The nose opens with aromas of dried cherry, stewed plum, leather, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, and earthy spice. With aeration, subtle notes of balsamic, forest floor, tea leaf, and faded floral tones may emerge.

On the palate it is soft, evolved, and balanced, with Barbera’s naturally bright acidity still providing freshness despite its age. The fruit has transformed into savory dried-fruit and earthy notes, accompanied by hints of spice, old wood, and light medicinal herbs. Tannins are gentle and fully integrated, giving the wine a smooth and rounded texture. The finish is medium in length, mature, and delicately fading.

Serving & food pairing:

Best served at 16–18°C. Stand the bottle upright several hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Minimal decanting is recommended to preserve the wine’s fragile mature aromas.

It pairs well with:

Braised beef and veal
Pasta with meat-based sauces
Mushroom risotto
Roasted poultry
Semi-aged and aged cheeses
Traditional Piedmontese cuisine

Producer:

Bersano is a historic Piedmontese winery founded in the early 20th century, well known for producing traditional wines from the Langhe and Monferrato areas. The estate played an important role in promoting Barbera d’Asti and other regional appellations, combining classic Piedmontese winemaking traditions with a focus on approachable, food-oriented wines suited for both domestic and international markets.
