1978 Barbera d’Asti – Contratto

The 1978 vintage in Piedmont produced balanced and classically styled wines, favouring structure and freshness over sheer concentration. From the historic house of Contratto, founded in 1867 and long associated with traditional Piedmontese winemaking, this Barbera d’Asti reflects a period when regional wines were crafted with restraint and intended for steady evolution.

Tasting Notes:
Now showing a mature brick-red hue with amber tones at the rim, the nose is gently evolved and savoury. Aromas of dried red cherry, plum and redcurrant are layered with notes of leather, dried herbs and subtle spice. On the palate it is medium-bodied and harmonious, with softened tannins and a lively acidity characteristic of Barbera that preserves freshness despite its age. Flavours of dried berry fruits, light balsamic tones and earthy nuance unfold gradually, leading to a smooth, elegant and persistent finish.

Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove any natural sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. A fine partner to braised meats, mushroom dishes, aged cheeses or traditional Piedmontese fare.
