Our short video introducing 1965 wines
In 1965, the civil rights movement in the United States intensified as Martin Luther King Jr. led the historic marches from Selma to Montgomery, spotlighting the struggle for racial equality. In space exploration, NASA’s Gemini program made significant strides, paving the way for the future moon landing. The Vietnam War saw increased U.S. involvement, marking a turning point in the conflict. Culturally, The Sound of Music premiered and became a global sensation, while The Beatles strengthened their worldwide impact with unforgettable performances and groundbreaking releases.
A bottle of wine or Port from 1965 makes the perfect 60 year old wine gift, whether for a birthday or anniversary. The 1965 wine vintage was generally a poor year for wine in many regions, particularly in Bordeaux and Italy. Portugal produced some good Ports but these were overshadowed by the legendary 1963 and 1966 Vintages. It's important to note that wine quality can also depend on the specific producer, the vineyard, and how well the wine has been stored over the years. At Vintage Wine and Port we work to secure bottles with the best provenance.
Portugal (Port): The 1965 port vintage was a challenging year due to fluctuating weather conditions; a small amount of single quinta port was made but it is very rare. However, some truly excellent single harvest Colheitas were produced. The weather at the start of the year was unsettled, with rain and thunderstorms at the end of July followed by a hot, dry August which developed the vines. The hot weather continued throughout the season and into the harvest, when it began to fluctuate. The grapes harvested were more raisin than the winemakers would like and this is reflected in the small amounts of port produced.
Italian: The 1965 vintage in Piedmont is generally considered weak, especially compared to the region's top years. Barolo and Barbaresco wines from 1965 are not sought after by collectors, as the wines from this vintage lacked the complexity, body, and aging potential that the region is renowned for.
Bordeaux: The 1965 Bordeaux vintage is not one sought after by collectors or connoisseurs due to the poor weather conditions and the resulting lackluster wines. Most wines from this vintage were consumed within a few years of release, as they did not have the structure or concentration to age gracefully. Spring: The year began with a cool and wet spring, which delayed flowering and created uneven ripening among the vines. Summer: The summer was particularly challenging. July was hot and dry, but August was much cooler and wetter than usual, which further complicated the growing season. Harvest: The harvest was hampered by rainy conditions, leading to diluted grape juice and less ripe grapes, which had a significant impact on the final wine quality.
