Croft Port, 1977

Vintage Port

Croft, 1977 Vintage Port

Vintage & Background
The 1977 vintage ranks among the greatest Port vintages of the 20th century, producing wines of exceptional depth, structure, and longevity. Croft, one of the oldest and most historic Port houses (est. 1588), crafted a particularly elegant and expressive wine in this year, known for its rich fruit, balance, and graceful evolution over time. Now with nearly five decades of age, it offers a rare chance to experience a fully mature classic from this legendary vintage.

Appearance & Nose
Brick-garnet in colour with a gently fading rim, the wine shows its maturity beautifully.

Crozes-Hermitage, 1977

Moillard

Now entering its fifth decade, a mature Crozes‑Hermitage Moillard typically presents a pale garnet hue with tawny edges. Expect secondary and tertiary aromas—perhaps subtle autumnal notes like dried cherry, forest floor, leather, and earth. On the palate: medium-bodied, with softened tannins and delicate fruit flavors. The character is likely gentle, savoury, and nuanced—charming in its nostalgic authenticity, rather than a tour de force.

Dolcetto d'Alba, 1977

Salvano Saverio

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Dow's, 1977

Vintage Port

1977 Dow’s – Vintage Port (Douro, Portugal)

A heralded vintage from a house famed for drier, more structured Ports—now in magnificent, mature form. Deep garnet shading to tawny at the rim. The nose is complex and classical: black cherry liqueur and plum compote, fig and date, orange peel, cacao and espresso, with violets, cedar, mint/eucalyptus and warm spice.

Silken yet authoritative on the palate. Sweet dark fruit and kirsch glide over lively acidity; the once-firm Dow’s tannins are now velvety and seamless. Layers of walnut, dark chocolate, licorice and clove lead to a long, tapering finish of cocoa and candied citrus.

Dow's, 1977

Vintage Port- MAGNUM
Presented in Dows Wooden Gift Case

Please note that this is a rare magnum format (1.5 L)
Medium cranberry red center and slight bricking on the edge. Intoxicating floral fragrance that filled the room, during its nine hour decant; accented by anise, plum and raspberry notes and a bit of spirit. Fresh, fleshy grape, dark cherry and fig flavors melded with underpinnings of licorice, chocolate and warming spirit. It's developing into a stunning middle-aged Port at 34 years of age, with little signs of nearing peak yet. Rich and multi-faceted, smooth and velvety ... even more so the second day it was opened. The acidity was near perfect and the tannins are tame but omnipresent; while the finish was spicy, warm and extremely long.

Ferreira, 1977

Vintage port

Reviews
Very pale mahogany red, watery in texture and weak rim. On the nose are cranberries and brown sugar with just a touch of sweet pea perfume. Wonderful sweetness in the mouth, with golden sultanas over the tart dried cranberries. The tartness is lovely and balances out the sweetness of the wine very well. There is so much complexity in the mid-palate that you can hold this wine in your mouth for ages, but eventually you have to swallow. And when you do there is an explosion of flavour which, after a brief flare of heat, works itself into a very long black licorice and aniseed aftertaste.

Fonseca Port, 1977

Vintage Port
Excellent provenance

Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age.

Montepulciano, 1977

d'Abruzzo, Rosso della Quercia - Casa Canditella

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

Quarles Harris, 1977

Vintage Port

***18/20, Jancis Robinson***

Healthy ruby with a brick rim. Quite subtle already; there is some perceptible evolution of colour and flavour here. Mineral rather than fruit flavours dominate. Very big and full. Very, very sweet indeed - in fact I thought it was from a Portuguese house. This wine delivers a pretty good combination of power, interest and, especially, sweetness. This is not a wine to be ignored! But it's a very particular style....without enormous tannic reserves. Jancis Robinson

Rosso Colline Luchesi, 1977

Alberto Bertolli

The 1977 Rosso Colline Lucchesi from Alberto Bertolli is a rare and fascinating example of mature Tuscan winemaking, offering a glimpse into the style and character of a wine that has quietly aged for nearly five decades. Produced in the hills surrounding Lucca—an area known for its charming, traditional blends of Sangiovese and local varietals—this bottle represents both regional heritage and the dedication of a small-scale, artisanal producer. The 1977 vintage in Tuscany was warm and generous, producing wines with richness, depth, and the capacity for graceful ageing.

In the glass, this mature red reveals a brick-garnet core fading to a tawny rim, a visual hallmark of long bottle ageing.

Smith Woodhouse, 1977

Vintage Port

1977 Smith Woodhouse – Vintage Port (Douro, Portugal)

A great year and a quietly classic house: the ’77 Smith Woodhouse is now at a glorious, mature plateau. Deep garnet shading to tawny at the rim; the nose is layered and refined—black cherry liqueur, fig and date, sweet orange peel, cacao and coffee bean, with violet, cedar and a touch of eucalyptus. The palate is silken and beautifully knit: sweet blackberry and kirsch glide over lively acidity and velvety, resolved tannins; notes of walnut, dark chocolate and baking spice lead to a long, graceful finish with candied citrus and cocoa.

Producer note: Smith Woodhouse (part of the Fladgate partnership) is known for concentrated,

Taylor Fladgate, 1977

Vintage Port

The 1977 Taylor's Vintage Port is an incredible wine from an outstanding vintage. Great plum red, vibrant. Fresh nose, clean fruit with delicate floral notes. A wine with great complexity of fruit – berry and spice, dense, luscious and concentrated, yet with a soft, delicate finish which belies the inner strength.

Reviews:
Robert Parker writes.... "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades.
