Cockburn Port, 1970

Vintage Port

Cockburn, 1970
Vintage Port

The legendary 1970 vintage is widely regarded as one of Cockburn’s last great “classic” productions before stylistic changes later in the decade. Now over half a century old, it shows the remarkable longevity and depth that made Cockburn a benchmark house for robust, fruit-driven Vintage Port with a distinctive wild-berry character. Time has softened the once-powerful structure, replacing youthful muscle with refinement, harmony, and aromatic complexity.

In the glass, the wine displays a deep tawny-garnet core with a lifted, mature nose of fig, cedar, rose oil, dried cherry, and warm spices.

Cotes du Rhone, 1970

Leon Rigault

Côtes du Rhône is a huge appellation in the south of France encompassing 40,300 ha. Plenty of white and rosé wine is produced in Côtes du Rhône but there can be no doubt that red is king. Usually Grenache will dominate the blend (except in the north where Syrah is allowed to be top dog, but these wines are relatively few) and is normally partnered with Syrah and/or Mourvèdre but a further 18 varieties are also permitted! A cheerful example might be light, soft, fruity and easy-drinking, while the finest examples may be full-bodied, concentrated, intense, spicy and ageworthy. But what they all invariably have in common is a fabulous sense of place and lashings of personality and character.

Dolcetto, 1970

Salvano Saverio

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Feuerheerd Port, 1970

Vintage Port

The 1970 Feuerheerd Vintage Port is a true gem from one of the Douro’s most celebrated vintages. Feuerheerd, founded in 1815 by the German merchant Dietrich Matthias Feuerheerd, is known for crafting classic, robust Ports that age gracefully for decades. While not as widely recognized as some of the major houses, Feuerheerd has long been respected among connoisseurs for its dedication to quality and traditional methods.

The 1970 vintage itself is legendary, declared by most major Port houses. It produced wines of exceptional depth, structure, and longevity. After over five decades in bottle, this Feuerheerd has fully matured, offering an elegant expression of both vintage and house style.

Fonseca Port, 1970

Vintage Port
Imported and Bottled by Grants of St James

An outstanding port from a classic vintage. The Fonseca 1970 is now fully mature, and is probably one of the finest glasses of port that you will ever taste. A wine of this quality will age superbly for many decades to come. A magnificent wine with abundant ripe fruit flavours and concentrated tannins. Perfect harmony and balance places this Port amongst the all-time greats.

Robert Parker, renowned critic writes of this Port.... "... it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports.

Graham's Port, 1970

Vintage Port

The 1970 Graham’s is a legendary Vintage Port from one of the Douro’s most consistently outstanding producers. Declared in an exceptional year, this wine has become one of the most celebrated Ports of the 20th century. Known for its lush, fruit-driven style, Graham’s 1970 is a benchmark for what mature Port can achieve — combining richness, depth, and graceful longevity.

After more than five decades in bottle, the wine has developed an extraordinary bouquet. Aromas of stewed plum, black cherry, and dried fig unfold alongside notes of rose petal, walnut, cedar, and a touch of caramel. There's a signature Graham’s opulence to the nose, yet it's balanced by a subtle sense of freshness and lifted spice.

Graham's Port, 1970

Vintage Port bottled for Army and Navy Stores
Labels bin soiled
Excellent provenance

*** 93 Points (Parker) ***

"...a definite Bordeaux-like nose! Well defined, foursquare at first, opening up nicely with maraschino cherries, cloves, burnt wood/embers and bergamot, gaining intensity all the time in the glass. The palate is very harmonious and elegant. Fleshy, harmonious, seductive on the palate with allspice, nutmeg and ginger sprinkled over the viscous finish and finally, freshly rolled tobacco on the aftertaste. Good length, powerful like many of the 1970 ports continue to be. Superb. Drink now-2020+ Neil Martin Wine Journal Tasted September 2009.

"The 1970 is a monumental vintage port and one of the greats of the vintage.

Inferno, 1970

Enologica Valtelinese
*** Clearance Offer- Damaged labels ***
Was £99 | Now £59

Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.
