Madeira, 1950

MBV - Tinta Negra - Bottled by Barbeito

This is a rare and very limited release of the 1950 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1950 Tinta Negra is very dry as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Although quite dry, this does not come across as too severe. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing. Massive finish that goes on and on.

Madeira, 1950

Rutherford and Miles Sercial Madeira

The *1950 Rutherford & Miles Sercial Madeira* is a rare and distinguished example of one of Madeira’s most captivating wine styles. Produced from the Sercial grape—celebrated for its dry, racy character—this wine has spent decades ageing in seasoned oak casks, allowing it to develop a remarkable balance of freshness, savoury depth, and layered complexity. Now over 70 years old, it stands as both a fascinating piece of Madeira’s winemaking history and a truly exceptional tasting experience.

In the glass, it would present a burnished amber-gold hue with glints of green at the rim, a hallmark of venerable Madeira.

Madeira, 1948

MBV Malvesia Bott: Barbeito, Madeira
94 Points - Wine Advocate

Review" The rambunctious 1948 Malvasia has a far more resinous, fiery bouquet compared directly against the 1954. It demands a little more coaxing, but offers absorbing aromas of melted candle wax, smoked walnut, nutmeg and cumin. The palate has a lovely opening, with Schezhuan setting the tongue on fire, and then it glides towards its elegant conclusion of barley sugar, bitter orange, chocolate and lemongrass. The aftertaste is extraordinarily long, the tongue tingling a minute after the Madeira has exited. It is the kind of Madeira that needs to be kept on a leash!" Neil Martin, Wine Advocate 2012.

Taylor Fladgate, 1948

Vintage Port
100 points - Neil Martin Vinous

100 points - Neil Martin Vinous.

The 1948 Taylor's has a strong tawny colour. On the nose there was a wonderful coffee, chocolate and tobacco. With an alluring herbal aroma. On the palate this port has a luscious feel on the palate and incredibly complex layers of caramel, chocolate and coffee. This continued with an incredible long persistent finish. VWP tasting March 2017

BY NEAL MARTIN | MAY 7, 2018

There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year.

Vouvray, 1947

Vouvray Mark Bredif

Deep gold colour. Multilayered aromas of flowers, spices, peaches, citrus, kumquats, and tangerines are followed by excellent balance between its sweetness and acidity. This is sweet but not cloying, with a smooth velvety texture and a long finish with the layered flavours persisting all the way through.

A fabulous finish to a meal can be enjoyed slightly chilled with cheeses or fruity desserts such as lemon méringue pie, mince tarts or pumpkin pie.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1947

Vintage Port - Plain label.

Warre’s Vintage Port 1947 is a true rarity and a fascinating piece of post-war winemaking history. The 1947 Warre’s typically shows a deep tawny or amber color, reflecting its age and long bottle maturation. On the nose, it often reveals a complex mix of dried fruit, toasted almonds, figs, and hints of citrus peel, leather, and old wood. The palate is delicate yet persistent, with soft sweetness, mellow tannins, and a touch of spice that lingers on the finish.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1942

Pauillac Grand Cru Classe, Bordeaux

Mature mahogany colour, a little cloudy. Plenty of glycerine, unctuous and creamy port like texture, but without the sweetness, which one could expect given that 1948 wasn’t a very ripe vintage. It kept getting better in the glass.

High shoulder

The Croft 1935 has a noticeably deep mahogany hue with light amber rim. The palate is simply outstanding with immense depth and complexity, beautiful sense of natural balance and harmony with spice, Manuka honey and dates. Long, seductive and irresistible, it is difficult to image exactly how port can be much better than this imperious Croft ’35. Brilliant.

Chateau Coutet, 1913

Barsac, Premier Cru Classe

1947 Chateau Coutet tasting note from Cellar Tracker. "If the nose on the 1947 Coutet is promising, then the palate over-delivers with the most fresh rough cut Seville orange marmalade, macadamia, toffee, cooked shiitake, Marsala, and unsmoked cigar. This isn’t the biggest, but I love its combination of fresh and savory, of young and old, of lush and svelte." Tasted 2022 - 96 Points

Château Coutet is a historic wine estate located in Barsac, Bordeaux, known for producing exceptional sweet wines. Established in the 13th century and classified as a Premier Cru Classé in 1855, it is one of the oldest and most esteemed vineyards in the Sauternes and Barsac regions.

Blandys, 1911

Bual, Madeira

Madeira Bual is typically sweeter than Madeira Sercial or Madeira Verdelho, but not quite as intensely sweet as Malmsey. You should expect a light mahogany/copper coloured wine with aromas of maple syrup, roasted walnut notes and hints of coffee. On the palate its high acidity will create a much needed balance against the sweetness making the sugar barely noticeable. Flavours of figs, vanilla and caramel should dominate the palate and the wine should finish off long with caramelised citrus notes.
