Taylor's three iconic port wine estates, located in the best parts of the Douro Valley - Terra Feita, Vargellas and Junco - encompass a huge area and various different styles of wine. Each estate is distinct from the others, with different strengths and styles to complement each other brilliantly. The 1986 Taylor Quinta de Vargellas is a vintage port from the renowned Taylor's wine house. While 1986 was not declared a vintage year for Taylor's overall, the Quinta de Vargellas estate often produces exceptional single-quinta vintage ports even in years that are not widely declared. The impressive 1976 Vargellas is a 50% Opague mature mahogany colour as befits this hot vintage. lots of spice on the nose which is full of cedar wood and plums. on the palate the wine is very attractive. Lovely tawny colour with a brick hue. The nose shows violets and sweet cherry with hints of wintergreen. On the palate it may not be as sweet as the earlier Ports from the 60s, but that is very much a good thing. Improved with air time, and by the end could almost detect some rich and sweet stewed fruits and Christmas spices balanced by the warming alcohol. …

TASTING NOTES
Deep mahogany colour with discreet olive highlights on the rim. A very fine, elegant nose, with an opulent core of wild honey, treacle and butterscotch infused with a spicy redolence of black pepper and cinnamon. Cedary cigar box aromas, savoury scents of wild herbs and a discreet aura of fresh mint as a further layer of complexity.

It is presented in a classic Taylor’s frosted bottle, and packaged in a high quality beech-wood box.
During its five decades of ageing in oak casks, this wine has taken on an attractive pale mahogany colour with olive amber highlights. On the nose the wine displays fine oaky aromas and complex spicy, nutty, cigar box notes against a warm mellow background of butterscotch and molasses. Ruby highlights surviving in the colour. Deep, intense, Burgundian richness. At first the spirit is rather overpowering. Then dark chocolate starts appearing, followed by herbal, gum cistus, licorice, cigar box, leathery quality really comes through in the mouth and a slightly medicinal character. Medium length.
