Description
1962 Aglianico del Vulture – Riforma Fondiaria Riserva
The volcanic slopes of Mount Vulture in Basilicata produce some of southern Italy’s most structured and long-lived wines. The 1962 vintage represents an era of traditional production, when extended ageing and patient cellar maturation were central to the style. This Riserva from Riforma Fondiaria offers a rare opportunity to experience mature Aglianico from a celebrated period of southern Italian winemaking.
Tasting Notes:
Now deep brick-garnet in colour with amber highlights at the rim, the nose is mature and savoury. Aromas of dried black cherry, plum and fig mingle with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and earthy spice. With time in the glass, subtle hints of cocoa, dried herbs and a gentle mineral edge characteristic of Vulture’s volcanic soils emerge. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, with softened tannins and a firm underlying structure that reflects Aglianico’s natural power. Flavours of dried dark fruits, balsamic tones and warm spice unfold gradually, leading to a long, warming and persistent finish.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. A fine partner to braised lamb, slow-cooked beef, game dishes or mature hard cheeses.
Summary:
A rare and characterful Riserva from a historic southern Italian vintage, the 1962 Aglianico del Vulture offers depth, structure and the savoury complexity that define well-aged Aglianico. A fascinating bottle for collectors and admirers of traditional regional wines.
