1962 Amarone della Valpolicella – Bertani

Bertani is one of the historic names of Valpolicella and a pioneer in the production of Amarone, having helped define the style in the late 19th century. The 1962 vintage represents an early era of Amarone’s development, when long drying of grapes and extended ageing in large Slavonian oak casks shaped wines of structure and longevity. Bottles from this period are rare and offer a fascinating glimpse into the origins of one of Italy’s most celebrated styles.

    Tasting Notes:
Now deep mahogany in colour with amber reflections at the rim, the nose is richly evolved and complex. Aromas of dried cherry, fig and prune intertwine with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and polished wood. With time in the glass, nuances of dark chocolate, espresso and warm spice emerge. On the palate it is full-bodied yet harmonious, with a smooth, velvety texture and softened tannins that have integrated over decades. Flavours of dried fruits, cocoa and subtle balsamic tones unfold gradually, leading to a long, warming and elegant finish.

    Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove any natural sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. An excellent partner to braised meats, game dishes, aged cheeses or simply savoured on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine.

    Summary:
A rare and characterful example of early Amarone from one of Valpolicella’s most historic producers. The 1962 Bertani offers depth, maturity and the distinctive richness that has come to define this iconic Italian style.
