Description
The Barbaresco 1956 Marchesi Villadoria is an extremely rare and historic Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont, Italy. With nearly seven decades of bottle ageing, it represents a fully mature and highly evolved expression of traditional Barbaresco from the mid-20th century, a period when winemaking in the Langhe was still deeply rooted in classic, low-intervention methods.
Tasting Notes:
The 1956 vintage is fully tertiary and very delicate. The nose opens with aromas of dried rose petals, sour cherry, leather, tobacco, forest floor, dried herbs, and truffle-like earthiness. With time in the glass, faint notes of balsamic reduction, cedarwood, tea leaf, and sweet spice may appear.
On the palate it is ethereal, soft, and highly evolved, with fully resolved tannins and gentle acidity. The fruit is no longer primary but has transformed into dried red berry and savory notes, supported by earthy and mineral complexity. The finish is subtle, elegant, and fading in a graceful, classic old Nebbiolo style.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Best served at 18°C. Handling must be extremely careful due to its age:
Gentle pouring recommended (decanting only if necessary)
Sediment is likely significant
Ideal pairings:
Braised meats (very simple preparation)
Truffle dishes
Mushroom risotto
Aged hard cheeses
Traditional Piedmontese cuisine
Producer:
Marchesi Villadoria is a historic Piedmontese winery with long-standing roots in the Langhe region. The estate is known for traditional winemaking approaches and for producing classic expressions of Nebbiolo, including Barolo and Barbaresco. Wines from this era reflect a more rustic, traditional style focused on longevity and terroir expression.
