Description
Overview:
A rare and beautifully mature expression of traditional Barbaresco, the 1961 ESM Cortese comes from one of Piedmont’s landmark vintages, celebrated for wines of structure, longevity and remarkable depth. Now fully evolved, it offers the haunting perfume, savoury complexity and refined elegance that define long-aged Nebbiolo from this historic era of Italian winemaking.
Appearance:
Brick-garnet in colour with tawny highlights at the rim, showing graceful maturity and classic long-aged Nebbiolo evolution.
Nose:
Beautifully evolved and highly aromatic, revealing layers of dried cherry, rose petal and redcurrant intertwined with leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With time in the glass, further nuances of truffle, cedarwood and warm spice emerge, adding depth and tertiary complexity.
Palate:
Medium-bodied, refined and harmonious, with fine, softened tannins supported by Nebbiolo’s characteristic acidity. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and gentle balsamic tones unfold gradually across the palate, while subtle notes of leather, spice and woodland character add further complexity and elegance.
Finish:
Long, graceful and contemplative, lingering through dried flowers, earthy spice, tobacco and delicate savoury nuance.
Decanting:
Stand upright for 2–3 days to allow sediment to settle. Decant carefully through a fine strainer and aerate 1–2 hours before serving at 16–18°C. Fragile corks are common; strain any fragments during decanting.
About the Producer:
ESM Cortese was associated with the traditional winemaking culture of Piedmont during the mid-20th century, producing classically styled Nebbiolo wines intended for extended bottle ageing. Mature Barbaresco from this era offers a compelling glimpse into the restrained, terroir-driven style that defined historic Piedmontese winemaking.
