Description
TThe 1965 Barbaresco by Marchesi di Barolo is a mature and graceful wine from one of Piedmont’s most historic producers. In the glass, it presents a pale garnet color with orange-brick hues that reflect its age. The appearance alone hints at the delicate structure and long evolution of this wine over the decades.
On the nose, the wine offers a classic aged Nebbiolo profile. Dried rose petals, leather, tobacco, and forest floor dominate the bouquet, while subtle traces of faded cherry, dried herbs, and earthy spices emerge with time in the glass. These tertiary aromas are a hallmark of properly aged Barbaresco, offering a complex and contemplative experience.
The palate is soft and refined, with most of the tannins having mellowed gracefully. While the fruit has largely evolved into dried and stewed notes, there is still a gentle acidity that lifts the wine. Hints of balsamic, dried fig, and autumn leaves create a layered mouthfeel, leading into a restrained but elegant finish.
1965 was not considered a standout vintage in Piedmont, marked by cooler and wetter weather, but reputable producers like Marchesi di Barolo still managed to craft wines of finesse and longevity. Though well past its peak, a carefully stored bottle of this Barbaresco can still offer a charming, nostalgic experience—a testament to the craftsmanship and heritage of the region.
