    1968 Barbaresco – Contratto (Piedmont)

The 1968 vintage in Piedmont produced classically structured wines with admirable longevity, favouring balance and traditional ageing potential. From the historic house of Contratto, founded in 1867 and long associated with traditional regional winemaking, this Barbaresco reflects an era when extended maturation in large oak casks and patient bottle ageing defined the style.

    Tasting Notes:
Now displaying a mature brick-garnet hue with amber highlights at the rim, the nose is gently evolved and expressive. Aromas of dried cherry, rose petal and redcurrant mingle with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With time in the glass, subtle hints of truffle, cedarwood and warm spice emerge, adding depth and refinement. On the palate it is medium-bodied and harmonious, with softened tannins and a fine thread of acidity that preserves balance. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and delicate balsamic tones unfold gradually, leading to a long, elegant and contemplative finish.

    Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. A fine partner to braised meats, truffle dishes, mushroom risotto or mature hard cheeses.

    Summary:
A rare and characterful Barbaresco from a traditional Piedmont producer, the 1968 Contratto offers mature complexity and classical Nebbiolo perfume shaped by decades of bottle age.
