Description
The Barbaresco 1970 “Sorì Tildìn” is an exceptionally rare and highly collectible early single-vineyard wine from Gaja, produced in the early phase of Angelo Gaja’s transformation of the estate. This bottling comes from a period when Gaja was beginning to isolate specific vineyard parcels—an important step that later defined modern Barbaresco.
At this time, Sorì Tildìn was not yet the fully modern icon it would become, but already it showed the potential of this site: south-facing exposure, powerful structure, and long ageing capacity.
Tasting Notes:
The 1970 vintage is fully mature and deeply tertiary. The nose opens with dried rose petals, cherry liqueur, leather, tobacco, forest floor, truffle, and earthy spice. With time in the glass, more complex notes of balsamic reduction, cedarwood, tea leaf, and dried herbs emerge.
On the palate it is elegant and evolved, with softened tannins and still-present acidity that gives shape and lift. Compared to later, more modern Sorì Tildìn bottlings, this wine is more traditional and slightly rustic in style, with an emphasis on earthy, savory complexity over pure fruit concentration. The finish is long, delicate, and contemplative.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Best served at 18°C. Given its age, careful handling is essential; gentle pouring is recommended to avoid disturbing sediment.
It pairs well with:
braised beef
roasted game
mushroom risotto
truffle dishes
aged hard cheeses
Producer:
Gaja is one of Italy’s most influential wineries, founded in 1859. Under Angelo Gaja’s leadership in the 1970s, the estate began pioneering vineyard selection and single-vineyard bottlings such as Sorì Tildìn. These early vintages represent a transitional era between traditional Barbaresco and the modern, internationally acclaimed style that Gaja would later define.
