Description
The Barbaresco 1978 Gaja “Sorì Tildìn” is an exceptionally rare and historically important bottling from one of Italy’s most iconic producers, Gaja. This wine comes from the legendary Sorì Tildìn vineyard, one of Angelo Gaja’s most prestigious crus, and represents an early era in the estate’s rise to international fame.
Tasting Notes:
The 1978 vintage is fully mature and highly evolved, showing a classic old Nebbiolo profile with Gaja’s early modern influence. On the nose it reveals dried rose petals, sour cherry, plum skin, leather, tobacco, truffle, forest floor, and balsamic notes, with subtle cedar and spice emerging over time.
On the palate it is elegant, soft, and deeply tertiary, with fully resolved tannins and still-present acidity providing structure. Compared to traditional Barbaresco of the era, Gaja’s wines already showed greater concentration and precision. The fruit is now fully evolved into dried red berries and savory earthy tones, with a long, refined, and complex finish.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Best served at 18°C. Due to its age, careful handling is essential, with gentle pouring recommended to avoid sediment disturbance.
It pairs well with:
braised beef and veal
game dishes
mushroom risotto
truffle-based pasta
aged hard cheeses
Producer:
Gaja is one of Italy’s most influential wineries, founded in 1859. Under Angelo Gaja’s leadership, the estate revolutionized Barbaresco winemaking through vineyard selection, lower yields, and more precise winemaking. The Sorì Tildìn vineyard is one of Gaja’s flagship single vineyards, known for producing structured, long-lived, and highly expressive Nebbiolo wines.
