Description

The 1965 Barolo from Contratto is a fascinating piece of Piedmontese wine history. Contratto, best known today for its traditional-method sparkling wines and historic cellars, also produced age-worthy still wines like Barolo during the mid-20th century. This vintage represents a traditional Barolo style—long macerations, large Slavonian oak aging, and a focus on structure and longevity.

In the glass, expect a faded garnet core with pronounced orange-brick edges, indicating full maturity. The nose is likely delicate and tertiary in nature, with aromas of dried roses, leather, tobacco leaf, and undergrowth. Hints of tar, sweet spice, dried fig, and antique wood may also be present, characteristic of classically aged Nebbiolo.

On the palate, the wine would be soft and resolved, with mellow tannins and a fine, lingering acidity that Barolo is known for. Flavours of stewed cherry, balsamic, earth, and dried mushroom may evolve in the glass, reflecting its age and complexity. The finish is expected to be gentle, elegant, and subtly layered.

The 1965 vintage in Barolo was variable—neither a top-rated nor disastrous year— careful cellaring is essential for bottles to have survived in good condition.
