    1969 Barolo – Contratto (Piedmont)

The 1969 vintage is regarded as one of the standout years of the late 1960s in Piedmont, producing Barolo wines of structure, depth and notable ageing potential. From the historic house of Contratto, founded in 1867 and long associated with traditional Piedmontese winemaking, this bottle reflects a classical era when extended ageing in large oak casks and patient cellaring defined the style.

    Tasting Notes:
Now showing a mature brick-garnet hue with amber highlights at the rim, the nose is beautifully evolved and layered. Aromas of dried cherry, rose petal and redcurrant intertwine with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With time in the glass, hints of truffle, cedarwood and warm spice emerge, adding further complexity. On the palate it is medium-bodied yet structured, with resolved tannins and a graceful line of acidity that maintains balance. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and gentle balsamic tones unfold gradually, leading to a long, elegant and contemplative finish.

    Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. A natural partner to braised meats, truffle dishes, game or mature hard cheeses.

    Summary:
A rare and characterful Barolo from a strong vintage and a historic Piedmont producer, the 1969 Contratto offers classical Nebbiolo perfume, structure and savoury complexity developed through decades of bottle age.
