Description
The Barolo DOC 1971 Francone Riserva is a rare historic red wine from the Langhe region in Piedmont, Italy. Produced by Francone, it is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes and reflects the traditional Barolo style of the early 1970s: structured, austere in youth, and built for very long bottle aging with slow evolution into complex tertiary aromas.
Tasting notes:
The 1971 vintage is now fully mature and deeply tertiary. The nose opens with aromas of dried rose petals, sour cherry, dried plum, leather, tobacco leaf, forest floor, and truffle-like earthy notes. With aeration, additional layers of dried herbs, spice, cedarwood, and balsamic nuances emerge.
On the palate it is evolved, elegant, and harmonious, with tannins now fully softened and integrated. The natural acidity of Nebbiolo still provides structure and lift, while the fruit has transformed into savory, dried-fruit, and earthy expressions. The finish is long, refined, and gently austere, typical of classic aged Barolo.
Serving & food pairing:
Best served at 16–18°C, with very gentle handling and minimal or no decanting.
It pairs well with:
Braised beef
Roasted veal or lamb
Game dishes (wild boar, hare)
Mushroom risotto
Truffle-based dishes
Aged hard cheeses
Producer:
Francone is a historic Piedmontese winery associated with traditional Barolo production. The estate has long worked with Nebbiolo and other native varieties, producing classic, cellar-oriented wines designed for aging and expression of the Langhe terroir.
