Description
The Giacomo Borgogno *Gran Barolo Dessert Stravecchio* is a rare and historic example of an aromatised wine from one of Barolo’s most iconic producers, combining the power and elegance of aged Barolo with the traditional Piedmontese art of herbal infusion. In the style of *Barolo Chinato*, this wine begins with a mature Barolo base—already rich in Nebbiolo’s hallmark aromas of rose, cherry, and spice—before being infused with a complex blend of botanicals, most notably quinine bark (*china*), along with herbs, roots, and warm spices. The *Stravecchio* designation signals extra-long maturation, resulting in extraordinary harmony and depth.
In the glass, it would show a deep garnet-brown core with amber and mahogany glints, revealing both its age and the influence of botanicals. The bouquet would be intensely perfumed—melding dried cherry, plum, and rose petal with notes of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and star anise. Bitter-herbal tones of quinine, gentian, and rhubarb root would weave through, alongside hints of cocoa, liquorice, candied orange peel, and balsamic complexity.
On the palate, the *Gran Barolo Dessert Stravecchio* would be velvety, warming, and perfectly balanced between sweetness, bitterness, and Nebbiolo’s natural tannic grip. The flavours would echo the nose—ripe dried fruit, spice, and dark chocolate—enveloped by a gentle medicinal bitterness from the botanicals. A vibrant acidity keeps it lively, while the finish is long and layered, leaving lingering impressions of spice, citrus zest, and herbal depth.
Traditionally enjoyed as a digestif, this wine is best served slightly chilled or at cellar temperature in a small tulip glass, allowing the aromatics to fully unfold. It pairs beautifully with high-cocoa dark chocolate, rich nut-based desserts, or strong blue cheeses, but it is equally compelling on its own as a slow, contemplative after-dinner drink. The Giacomo Borgogno *Gran Barolo Dessert Stravecchio* is more than just a wine—it is a luxurious and historic expression of Piedmont’s vinous heritage, uniting the elegance of aged Barolo with the alchemy of fine herbal infusion.
