Description
The 1977 Malmsey was aged for 41 years in seasoned American oak casks at Quinta das Maravilhas in Funchal. This extended maturation period, influenced by the unique microclimate of the estate, has imparted remarkable depth and complexity to the wine.
Tasting Notes:
Dark mahogany colour with golden reflections. A characteristic aroma of madeira wine, having pronounced notes of exotic woods, dried and crystallized fruits and spices. On the mouth its full bodied, smooth, sweet releasing notes of dark chocolate, spices and Tobacco, and has a long aftertaste with notes of fruitcake, molasses and spices.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Decanting will help remove any deposit that may have occurred in bottle over time. Serve chilled at 12–14°C. This vintage Malmsey is an excellent choice as a digestif and pairs wonderfully with rich desserts such as Christmas pudding, dark chocolate confections, and crystallized fruits. It also complements foie gras and a selection of fine cheeses. Once opened it can be enjoyed over several months.
Cellaring Potential:
This wine is drinking beautifully now, but its structure ensures it will remain vibrant for years to come. Store upright in a dark, fresh and dry room with constant temperature, ideally no higher than 16ºC.

Reviews
Wine & Spirits: 98 points – "The resonance of its flavors completely fills your head with scents of orange, plum, almond and persimmon, while the weave of those flavors comes together to warm you from the inside out, wrapping your senses in something that feels like a silk blanket, weightless and comforting."
Wine Enthusiast: 95 points – "Toffee, caramel and dried fruits are shot through with acidity. This is a beautiful wine, aged in wood since the harvest, and ready to drink."
Wine Spectator: 94 points – "This has lovely toffee, sesame, ginger and bergamot notes laced with flashes of sandalwood and hazelnut. Has cut and freshness but there's an alluring mellow edge through the finish as the flavors meld together."
Wine Advocate: 92 points – "The 1977 Malmsey is showing well, offering up aromas of dried figs, rich spices, demerara sugar, espresso roast, old Armagnac and marmalade. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny textured and nicely concentrated, with considerable savory nuance to complement its sweet core, concluding with a pure and moderately intense finish."
