Description
Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) Riserva 1991 Kametz is a historic red wine from Alto Adige (South Tyrol), Italy, produced by the winery Kametz. “Blauburgunder” is the traditional German name for Pinot Noir in this alpine region, where cooler mountain climates allow for slow ripening and wines with finesse, acidity, and long aging potential. The 1991 Riserva represents a mature expression of early 1990s Alto Adige Pinot Noir, a period when the region was increasingly refining its focus on quality and terroir-driven winemaking.
This style is typically characterized by restrained extraction, careful aging, and an emphasis on elegance rather than power, especially in reserve-level bottlings intended for longer bottle evolution.
Tasting Notes:
The wine typically shows a medium garnet color with clear brick-orange and amber reflections at the rim, consistent with more than three decades of aging. The bouquet is refined and tertiary, opening with dried cherry, red currant, and wild strawberry, followed by layered aromas of dried rose petals, orange peel, and subtle forest herbs. With aeration, more complex notes of leather, tobacco, forest floor, and earthy truffle nuances may emerge, reflecting long bottle maturation in a cool-climate Pinot Noir style.
On the palate, it is usually medium-bodied with a delicate, silky texture and fully softened tannins. The natural alpine acidity remains a key structural element, giving the wine lift and balance even at this age. Flavors mirror the nose, with dried red fruits, floral hints, and earthy-mineral undertones leading to a long, elegant, and gently fading finish.
Bottle condition is particularly important for wines of this age: well-preserved examples maintain aromatic clarity and finesse, while others may show more oxidative or fragile characteristics depending on storage history.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Serve at 14–16°C, slightly cooler than more tannic reds, and handle gently. Decant only if necessary to remove sediment, as older Pinot Noir can be delicate and quickly evolve with oxygen exposure.
Pairs well with roasted poultry, duck, game birds, mushroom risotto, veal dishes, and medium-aged alpine cheeses. It is also well suited to slow, contemplative tasting where subtle aromatic changes in the glass are part of the experience.
Producer:
Kametz is an Alto Adige winery associated with traditional mountain winemaking and early expressions of varietal Pinot Noir (Blauburgunder) in the region. Bottlings like the 1991 Riserva reflect a transitional period in South Tyrolean winemaking, combining traditional restraint with increasing attention to vineyard selection and aging potential.
