1977 Bonarda – La Versa (Lombardy)

The 1977 vintage in northern Italy produced classically styled wines, favouring balance and steady development. La Versa, founded in the early 20th century in the Oltrepò Pavese area of Lombardy, is traditionally associated with regional varietals and classical winemaking methods. This Bonarda reflects a historic era of production, shaped by patience and extended bottle ageing.

    Tasting Notes:
Now displaying a mature brick-red hue with garnet reflections at the rim, the nose is gently evolved and savoury. Aromas of dried red cherry, plum and cranberry mingle with notes of leather, dried herbs and subtle earthy spice. With time in the glass, delicate hints of balsamic nuance and forest floor emerge. On the palate it is medium-bodied and harmonious, with softened tannins and a lively acidity that preserves balance despite its age. Flavours of dried berry fruits and savoury undertones lead to a smooth, elegant and gently persistent finish.

    Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. A natural partner to charcuterie, braised meats, mushroom dishes or mature hard cheeses.

    Summary:
A rare and characterful example of mature Bonarda from a traditional northern Italian producer, offering savoury complexity and classical regional character shaped by decades of bottle age.
