Description
The Bricco del Drago DOC 1971 Cascina Drago is a historic red wine from Piedmont, Italy. Produced by Cascina Drago, this wine reflects the traditional Piedmontese style of the early 1970s: structured, earthy, and deeply connected to regional grape-growing traditions. Wines from this period were typically crafted with an emphasis on longevity, food compatibility, and expression of local terroir rather than modern extraction or heavy oak influence.
Tasting notes:
The 1971 vintage is now fully mature and showing advanced tertiary development. The nose opens with aromas of dried cherry, stewed plum, leather, tobacco, dried rose petals, forest floor, and earthy spice. With aeration, notes of balsamic, truffle, tea leaf, and old wood may gradually emerge.
On the palate it is soft, evolved, and harmonious, with tannins fully integrated after decades of bottle aging. The fruit has transformed into savory dried-fruit and earthy characteristics, supported by hints of autumn leaves, spice, and subtle herbal notes. Acidity remains sufficient to maintain balance and structure, while the finish is medium in length, mature, and gently fading with lingering earthy and leathery tones.
Serving & food pairing:
Best served at 16–18°C. The bottle should be stood upright several hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Decant only gently and briefly if necessary due to the wine’s delicate mature condition.
It pairs well with:
Braised beef and veal
Game and roasted meats
Mushroom and truffle dishes
Risotto with earthy sauces
Aged cheeses
Traditional Piedmontese cuisine
Producer:
Cascina Drago was associated with traditional winemaking in Piedmont, a region internationally respected for its structured and age-worthy red wines. Wines such as Bricco del Drago reflected the historic approach of the area during the mid-20th century: authentic, terroir-driven expressions designed to accompany local cuisine and develop complexity through extended bottle aging.
