Description

The 1997 Burmester Vintage Port is a fine example of a classic single-year release from one of Portugal’s most historic port houses. 1997 was an exceptional declared vintage across the Douro Valley, producing wines of richness, balance, and great aging potential. Burmester’s interpretation of this year reflects the elegance and structure that define their style, while also showcasing the concentration and fruit depth for which the vintage is known.

In the glass, it displays a deep ruby colour with just a touch of garnet at the rim — a sign of its maturity while still retaining youthful vibrancy. The nose is rich and aromatic, offering layers of black cherry, fig, cassis, and prune, followed by hints of eucalyptus, violet, and warming spice. Over time, more complex tertiary notes such as tobacco leaf and dark chocolate have started to emerge.

On the palate, this port is full-bodied, smooth, and finely structured. Silky tannins support the intense dark fruit flavours, while balanced acidity brings freshness and lift. The wine glides across the tongue, revealing nuances of blackberries, liquorice, and dried fruits, finishing long and refined with a gentle warmth.

Now nearly three decades old, the 1997 Burmester Vintage Port is drinking beautifully but still has more to give. It’s perfect for special occasions and pairs wonderfully with blue cheeses, dark chocolate desserts, or simply enjoyed on its own to appreciate its complexity. Decanting is recommended to fully enjoy its depth and aromatic richness.
