  • Description

The Cálem 2015 Vintage Port Wine is noted as having aromas of “black fruit and hints of spice and cocoa” with a “robust and sweet” palate. It is a blend of 30% Touriga Naçional, 30% Touriga Franca, 30% Tinta Roriz and 10% Sousão.

Winemaker and oenologist, Carlos Alves, said: “2015 was an unusual year. Exceptional wines from the Douro Superior but some imbalance in Cima Corgo and Baixo Corgo. 2015 wines have a vibrant acidity and demanded an extensive and detailed work at the winery.”

***90-92 Points Wine Advocate*** - Mark Squires- Wine Advocate- Aug 17

The 2015 Vintage Port is the only declared vintage in the Sogevinus stable this year. This is a blend of Touriga Nacional (30%), Touriga Franca (30%), Tinta Roriz (30%) and Sousão (10%), coming in at 94 grams per liter of residual sugar. A bit rounder and seemingly more concentrated than the Kopke, its main competitor in the Sogevinus stable this issue, this does a better job of filling the mouth and coating the palate. For its part, the Kopke power might even be superior and it may also have more vivid, better defined fruit, although a little darker in flavors. There are pros and cons to each, if you're comparing. That said, this is nicely balanced, too. It evolved beautifully in the glass and the fruit soaks up the power. Best of all, its modest price makes it a very good value and a serious bargain. This is an easy purchase. This was a tank sample, out of barrel and the final blend when tasted. It should be released by the time this article appears. It will be approachable fairly young and age fairly well.
