Description

The Carema DOC 1976 Cantina Produttori del Nebbiolo di Carema is a historic red wine from northern Piedmont, Italy. Produced by Cantina Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema, it is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes grown on the steep, terraced vineyards of Carema, one of the most extreme and “heroic” viticultural zones in Italy, where vines are trained on stone-supported pergolas known locally as pilun.

This wine represents a traditional expression of Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo, typically lighter in body than Barolo and Barbaresco but highly aromatic, mineral, and long-lived when well stored.

Tasting notes:

The 1976 vintage is now fully mature and showing deep tertiary development. The nose opens with aromas of dried rose petals, sour cherry, orange peel, dried plum, leather, tobacco leaf, tea, and forest floor, with a distinctive mountain mineral and earthy character typical of Carema.

With aeration, additional nuances of tar, spice, dried herbs, and faint balsamic notes may appear. There is often a subtle “iron-like” minerality that is characteristic of Nebbiolo from this high-altitude terroir.

On the palate it is elegant, fine-boned, and fully evolved, with tannins completely softened and integrated. The acidity remains lively enough to sustain structure, while the fruit has shifted into savory dried-fruit and earthy complexity. The finish is long, graceful, and slightly austere, with a lingering mineral edge.

Serving & food pairing:

Best served at 16–18°C, with careful handling and minimal intervention.

It pairs well with:

Braised beef or veal
Game dishes (hare, wild boar)
Polenta with mushrooms
Aged alpine cheeses
Truffle-based dishes
Producer:

Cantina Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema is a cooperative founded in 1960 to preserve the traditional viticulture of Carema. The winery represents the collective work of small growers maintaining steep terraced vineyards, producing some of the most refined and age-worthy expressions of Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte.
