Description
The 1996 vintage in Bordeaux is widely regarded as a classic, particularly on the Left Bank, though the best Right Bank estates also produced wines of structure, balance and ageing potential. A warm growing season followed by favourable harvest conditions allowed for steady ripening, resulting in wines that have developed elegant, savoury complexity over time.
Château Pavie-Decesse 1996 is a mature and characterful expression of this Saint-Émilion estate. With extended bottle age, the wine now displays a complex bouquet of dried plum, black cherry and fig, layered with notes of leather, tobacco, cedar and forest floor. Subtle hints of spice and earthy undertones add further depth.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with softened, fully resolved tannins and a gentle freshness that carries the evolved fruit. The structure is harmonious and composed, showing the tertiary character expected at this stage of maturity. Flavours of dried fruits, leather and savoury spice lead into a smooth, balanced finish of moderate length.
A fine choice for a 1996 birthday or anniversary, and well suited to roast lamb, beef dishes or mature cheeses. Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open before serving.
