Description

The 1979 Château Belgrave is a mature Fifth Growth Haut-Médoc that reflects the enduring quality and classic character of one of Bordeaux's historic classified estates. Situated in the heart of Saint-Laurent-Médoc, Château Belgrave has long been recognised for producing structured, age-worthy wines that combine the power of Cabernet Sauvignon with the elegance and refinement typical of the Médoc. After more than four decades of ageing, this vintage offers a fascinating glimpse into traditional Bordeaux winemaking.

The origins of Château Belgrave date back to the eighteenth century, and the estate was included in the famous 1855 Classification as a Cinquième Cru Classé. Over the years, significant investment in both the vineyards and winery has helped maintain its reputation as one of the leading properties in the Haut-Médoc. The gravel-rich soils of the estate provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, contributing to the wine's distinctive structure and longevity.

The bouquet is beautifully evolved, displaying aromas of cedar, tobacco leaf and dried blackcurrants, complemented by notes of leather, forest floor and earthy spice. With aeration, further layers of cigar box, dried herbs and mature fruit emerge, creating a complex and inviting aromatic profile that reflects its considerable bottle age.

On the palate, the wine is elegant and fully mature, with softened tannins and a harmonious texture. Flavours of dried black fruits, cedarwood and savoury earth are balanced by refreshing acidity, while subtle notes of leather and spice add further depth. The finish is long, graceful and nuanced, highlighting the classic character of aged Left Bank Bordeaux.

Now at full maturity, the 1979 Château Belgrave is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. Carefully decant to remove sediment and serve alongside roast lamb, beef Wellington, game dishes or mature hard cheeses. A charming and authentic mature Bordeaux that showcases the timeless appeal of traditional Haut-Médoc claret.
