Description
Château Calon-Ségur 2004 is a superb example of classic, traditionally styled Saint-Estèphe. The vintage favoured estates with meticulous vineyard work, and Calon-Ségur produced one of the most refined and best-balanced wines of the year. Now with over twenty years of ageing, it shows the château’s trademark combination of structure, purity, and quiet power.
The bouquet is beautifully evolved, offering aromas of blackcurrant, graphite, warm earth, cedar and dried roses. Subtle notes of cigar box and forest floor underline the wine’s maturity, while still leaving plenty of brightness in the fruit. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and wonderfully composed, delivering layered flavours of cassis, plum, and savoury spice.
Tannins, once firm in youth, have now softened into a silky, integrated frame, giving the wine its graceful texture. The hallmark Saint-Estèphe minerality runs through the mid-palate, adding lift and definition. There is admirable freshness and balance, with a long finish that tapers cleanly, emphasising finesse over sheer weight.
Fully mature and drinking beautifully, the 2004 Calon-Ségur is an excellent choice for lovers of classic claret. It pairs effortlessly with roast beef, lamb, or mushroom dishes, and represents a rare opportunity to enjoy a top Third Growth at its perfect drinking window. A refined, authentic expression of both the vintage and the estate.
