Description

Château Lafite Rothschild 2001, Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classé

The 2001 Château Lafite Rothschild is a beautifully refined expression of this First Growth, offering elegance, balance and classic Pauillac character. Coming from a vintage often overshadowed by neighbouring years, this wine has developed into a graceful and highly drinkable claret.

The nose is aromatic and complex, with notes of blackcurrant, cedar and graphite, layered with subtle hints of tobacco, pencil shavings and dried herbs. There is a quiet precision to the aromatics, with everything finely integrated rather than overtly powerful.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and impeccably balanced, with fine, silky tannins and a fresh backbone of acidity. The fruit is mature and nuanced, showing cassis and dark cherry alongside savoury notes of leather and earth, all supported by well-judged oak.

The finish is long, elegant and persistent, with a gentle minerality and lingering notes of cedar and spice. Now fully mature and drinking beautifully, this is a superb example of Lafite’s understated style and a compelling choice for those who value finesse over power.

Food Pairing
Perfect with classic dishes such as roast lamb, beef Wellington or game, where its structure and savoury complexity complement rich, refined flavours.

Reviews

Tasted at "The Sampler's" icon tasting in London. The 2001 Lafite Rothschild has a quintessential bouquet for Lafite: very pure, almost understated at first. It then begins to open with briary, blackberry leaf, cedar and freshly rolled tobacco with subtle floral notes emerging after three of four minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and it certainly shows more vitality than the 1985 served alongside. Slightly grainy tannins, more feminine than previous bottles with dark plum, blackberry, citrus fruit, a touch of dried apricot and a very precise finish. Superb. Tasted December 2011.
