Description
Château Mouton Rothschild, 1986
Pauillac – Premier Grand Cru Classé
The 1986 vintage in Bordeaux is regarded as one of the most structured and age-worthy of the decade, particularly on the Left Bank. In Pauillac, Cabernet Sauvignon thrived, producing wines of formidable tannic backbone, depth and longevity. Château Mouton Rothschild, elevated to First Growth status in 1973, crafted a 1986 that is often cited among the standout wines of the vintage — powerful, concentrated and built for extended ageing.
Known for its opulent style and meticulous selection, Mouton in 1986 combined richness with structure, delivering a wine that has evolved steadily over the decades while retaining impressive vitality.
Tasting Notes:
Now deep garnet with brick tones at the rim, the nose is intense and classically Pauillac. Aromas of blackcurrant, cassis and dark plum are layered with notes of cedar, graphite and tobacco leaf. With time in the glass, nuances of leather, truffle and warm spice emerge. On the palate it is full-bodied and structured, the tannins still present yet well-integrated, supporting flavours of dark berries, cocoa and subtle oak. The finish is long, firm and commanding, reflecting the vintage’s renowned backbone.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Best served at cellar temperature and decanted to allow the wine to fully open. A superb companion to roast lamb, beef or game, as well as mature hard cheeses.
Summary:
A powerful and enduring First Growth from a benchmark Left Bank vintage, Château Mouton Rothschild 1986 offers depth, structure and classic Pauillac character — a commanding expression from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates.

*** 100 Points - Parker ***
Deep garnet-black colour. An incredible array of aromas on the nose: blackberry, black cherry, tobacco, espresso, leather, black olive and loam. The palate is absolutely seamless from first impression to finish, effortlessly building layers of complexity in the mouth and leading to a very long, earth and spice finish. I can’t see how this could possibly be improvement so have no alternative but concede perfection. Drink now to 2045+. Tasted March 2009" Parker Wine Advocate, 2009
