Description

1953 Château Roumieu

Overview:
A remarkable survivor from one of Bordeaux’s great post-war eras, the 1953 Château Roumieu offers a fascinating expression of mature Sauternes with deep tertiary complexity, honeyed richness and old-world charm. Now at more than seventy years of age, well-preserved bottles provide a rare opportunity to experience the evolved character and quiet elegance of traditionally styled sweet Bordeaux.

Appearance:
Deep amber to mahogany-gold in colour, with burnished copper reflections that reflect its exceptional maturity and concentration.

Nose:
Highly evolved and complex, revealing aromas of orange marmalade, dried apricot, burnt sugar and acacia honey layered with notes of walnut, old oak, saffron and caramelised citrus peel. Further nuances of beeswax, fig, antique wood and exotic spice emerge with time in the glass.

Palate:
Silky, mellow and deeply tertiary in profile, with flavours of candied orange, honeyed stone fruits and dried fig supported by notes of toffee, roasted nuts and gentle oxidative complexity. Despite its age, the wine retains balancing acidity that carries the sweetness gracefully across the palate, while the mature botrytis character adds texture, depth and lingering savoury nuance.

Finish:
Long, warming and beautifully evolved, leaving lingering impressions of marmalade, caramel, dried fruits and soft spice.

About the Estate:
Château Roumieu is a traditional Sauternes estate situated in the Bordeaux region of France, known for producing classically styled sweet wines from botrytised Semillon-led blends. While less widely known than the leading classified growths, mature vintages such as 1953 can offer compelling examples of old-style Sauternes, particularly when well preserved and carefully cellared over decades.
