2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape “La Crau de Ma Mère” – Vignobles Mayard
A superb single-vineyard cuvée from Vignobles Mayard, sourced from the renowned La Crau plateau, and now showing the depth and refinement of a great Rhône vintage with extended bottle age.
Tasting Note
The nose is rich and expressive, offering layers of ripe blackberry, plum and kirsch, intertwined with notes of garrigue, liquorice, spice and a touch of leather. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful yet beautifully integrated, with fine, resolved tannins supporting concentrated dark fruit and savoury complexity. Hints of pepper, dried herbs and earthy undertones lead into a long, structured and warming finish.
Vintage & Vineyard
The 2005 vintage is widely regarded as one of the standout years in the Southern Rhône, producing wines of exceptional concentration, balance and longevity. The “La Crau de Ma Mère” cuvée comes from old vines planted in the famous La Crau vineyard, known for its large galets roulés that store heat and aid ripening. This terroir delivers wines of power and structure, and in 2005, the combination of ideal growing conditions and low yields has resulted in a wine that has matured slowly and gracefully over two decades.
Serving
Serve at 16–17°C. Decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its complexity.
