Chianti, 1976 – Santa Lucia (Pierluigi Branca)
    Imperial Format – 5.0 Litres

The 1976 vintage in Tuscany was warm and consistent, producing classically structured Chianti with firm acidity and steady ageing potential. During this period, Chianti was still defined by traditional methods — extended ageing in large oak botti and a clear emphasis on balance over overt richness. Santa Lucia, under the direction of Pierluigi Branca, reflected this restrained and regional style, crafting wines intended for gradual evolution rather than immediate display. Presented here in an impressive 5.0 litre format, this bottle represents both the historic character of 1970s Chianti and the celebratory tradition of large-format releases.

    Tasting Notes:
Now deep garnet with pronounced brick and amber tones at the rim, the nose is fully mature and expressive. Aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant compote and stewed plum are layered with leather, tobacco and old cedar. With air, nuances of dried herbs, balsamic hints and gentle spice emerge. On the palate it is medium-bodied, savoury and harmonious, with softened tannins and a refined acidity carrying flavours of dried red fruits, earthy undertones and subtle oak spice. The finish is long, warming and classically Tuscan in character.

    Serving & Food Pairing:
Given its age and substantial format, stand upright well in advance to allow sediment to settle before careful decanting. Serve at cellar temperature. A fine partner to roast beef, game, aged Pecorino or traditional Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla Fiorentina.

    Summary:
A rare large-format Chianti from the mid-1970s, the 1976 Santa Lucia offers mature complexity, historical character and considerable visual presence — an impressive centrepiece for collectors and celebratory occasions alike.
