Description
The Chianti DOCG 1987 Barone Ricasoli is a historic red wine from Tuscany, Italy. Produced by Barone Ricasoli, it is a classic Sangiovese-based Chianti made in the traditional style of the late 1980s, when Chianti production was becoming more defined by stricter DOCG regulations and greater emphasis on quality and regional identity.
Tasting notes:
The 1987 vintage is now fully mature and showing developed tertiary character. The nose opens with aromas of dried cherry, sour plum, leather, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, and forest floor. With aeration, additional nuances of earth, spice, balsamic tones, and light cedarwood may appear.
On the palate it is evolved, smooth, and harmonious, with tannins now fully softened and integrated. The natural acidity of Sangiovese still provides structure and freshness, while the fruit has transformed into savory, dried-fruit, and earthy expressions. The finish is medium-long, refined, and gently austere, typical of classic aged Chianti from a historic estate.
Serving & food pairing:
Best served at 16–18°C, with very gentle handling and minimal or no decanting.
It pairs well with:
Roasted or braised meats
Traditional Tuscan pasta with ragù
Game dishes
Mushroom-based recipes
Aged Pecorino cheeses
Producer:
Barone Ricasoli is one of the oldest wine estates in the world, with origins dating back centuries. The estate played a fundamental role in defining the modern concept of Chianti and continues to be a benchmark producer of Sangiovese-based wines in Tuscany.
