Description
Cockburn, 1970
Vintage Port
The legendary 1970 vintage is widely regarded as one of Cockburn’s last great “classic” productions before stylistic changes later in the decade. Now over half a century old, it shows the remarkable longevity and depth that made Cockburn a benchmark house for robust, fruit-driven Vintage Port with a distinctive wild-berry character. Time has softened the once-powerful structure, replacing youthful muscle with refinement, harmony, and aromatic complexity.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep tawny-garnet core with a lifted, mature nose of fig, cedar, rose oil, dried cherry, and warm spices. Secondary notes of faint wild herbs, cacao and tobacco emerge with aeration, giving it an old-school Douro character that is both nostalgic and immensely satisfying. The palate is silky and graceful, with dried red fruits, orange peel, nutmeg and a gentle sweetness kept in line by a thread of acidity.
The mid-palate is beautifully evolved, offering savoury depth alongside polished sweetness. Soft tannins still provide shape, though the wine now glides effortlessly across the palate, finishing long with notes of toasted almond, plum compote and sandalwood. This is a bottle that rewards slow enjoyment and extended aeration, as the layers continue to unfurl in the glass.
A superb choice for collectors, anniversaries, or those wanting to experience Cockburn at its historic peak. The 1970 remains one of the most reliable mature Vintage Ports on the market—complex, elegant, and drinking at a beautiful plateau with no need for further ageing. Ideal with hard cheeses, dried fruits, or simply on its own as a contemplative glass.
