Cockburn’s 2024 Vintage Port
A Bold and Structured Vintage from a Historic Douro House
Cockburn’s returns with its 2024 Vintage Port, a wine that perfectly captures the house’s renowned style of bold structure, vibrant fruit, and unmistakable grip. Following the celebrated back-to-back declarations of 2015, 2016, and 2017, the 2024 vintage marks a confident return for one of the Douro’s most historic names, combining power, freshness, and classic Cockburn’s character.
Deep purple-black in colour, the nose is vibrant and expressive, revealing aromas of ripe cherry, strawberry, kirsch, and black plum layered with notes of dark chocolate, anise, wild herbs, and rockrose. Subtle floral tones and hints of schist and spice add complexity, while the lifted red fruit profile gives the wine remarkable freshness and aromatic precision.
On the palate, the wine is concentrated, energetic, and firmly structured, with intense red and black fruit flavours framed by Cockburn’s hallmark peppery tannins and mineral grip. Layers of black tea, tobacco, liquorice, and dark spice emerge through the mid-palate, while vibrant acidity provides balance and definition. The finish is long, powerful, and dry in style, showing the distinctive schist-driven structure and flinty character that define great Cockburn’s Vintage Ports.
The 2024 growing season delivered excellent conditions for a classic declaration, with abundant winter rainfall replenishing reserves and cooler temperatures during the final ripening period preserving freshness and aromatic clarity. Traditional foot treading in granite lagares and the exceptional quality of Touriga Nacional from Quinta dos Canais have produced a wine of remarkable concentration, structure, and ageing potential.

The house’s flagship vineyard, Quinta dos Canais, remains central to the style of Cockburn’s Vintage Port, producing wines with remarkable concentration, freshness, and longevity.

Reviews
A blend from Quinta dos Canais and Vale Coelho, both in the Douro Superior, 63% Touriga Nacional, 24% Touriga Franca, 9% Alicante Bouschet and 4% Sousão: characteristically deep in colour like all these wines; open and gentle on the nose with a pronounced floral character (orange blossom); similarly suave and gentle initially on the palate, mouth-filling and very flattering in style, some dark chocolate concentration with tannins rising to a lovely rich, complete, firm finish. 2,980 cases. 18 - Richard Mayson
