Description
The 1958 Constantino Vintage Port is a rare and charming survivor from a lesser-declared vintage, offering a glimpse into mid-20th-century Portuguese winemaking from one of the Douro’s traditional producers. Constantino, founded in the late 19th century, was known for producing solid, classically styled Ports, and the 1958 is a particularly elegant and mature expression, now over six decades in bottle.
On the nose, the wine opens with delicate, evolved aromas of dried cherry, orange peel, and spiced fig, interwoven with hints of leather, polished wood, and floral potpourri. There’s a fine oxidative character that adds depth, bringing in subtle notes of walnut, old books, and sweet herbs. The bouquet is complex yet gentle, reflecting its age with grace and restraint.
The palate is medium-bodied and silky, offering flavours of stewed plum, raisin, cocoa, and almond, balanced by soft acidity and a whisper of spirit. The sweetness is modest, more integrated than overt, giving the wine a mature, tawny-like feel with vintage complexity. While not as dense or powerful as the great declared years, the 1958 Constantino impresses with its subtlety, balance, and long, nutty finish.
This wine is fully mature and best enjoyed now. Decant gently to remove sediment, though it may not require extensive breathing time. Serve slightly below room temperature, ideally with aged cheeses, walnut desserts, or as a contemplative sipper on its own. A lovely piece of Port history, this bottle is more about refinement than power—perfect for those who appreciate the quiet beauty of aged wines.
