Description
Appearance:
Medium garnet with gentle tawny hues at the rim, showing the elegant evolution of this small Saint‑Émilion Grand Cru over nearly 70 years. The core still holds colour, but age has softened the edges to an inviting amber‑tinged brilliance.
Nose:
Enticing and mature, with dried red and black fruit — think plum compote, dried cherry and softened cassis — interlaced with earthy forest floor, cedar chest, and delicate leather. Secondary notes of tobacco leaf, spice and a hint of game add complexity without overwhelming the perfume.
Palate:
Medium‑bodied and refined, the palate unfolds with memories of black plum, dried raspberry and faint herbaceous nuances. Tannins are fully resolved, now silky but still providing structure. Subtle cedar and gentle spice interplay with savoury tertiary elements, giving the wine a harmonious and nuanced presence.
Finish:
Moderately long and graceful, finishing on notes of earth, cedar bark and soft dried herbs — a testament to the stable, balanced character of the 1955 Bordeaux vintage. Overall the wine shows poise and complexity over power, a hallmark of mature right‑bank Bordeaux from this era.
Comment:
1955 Château Corbin is a classic Saint‑Émilion Grand Cru that has evolved into a harmonious, secondary‑aromatic Bordeaux, offering refined tertiary character, subtle complexity and elegant drinkability. It’s a beautiful example of how well‑made Merlot‑based claret can age when well stored.
