Description
D'Oliveiras 1890 Verdelho Madeira
The 1890 Verdelho from D’Oliveiras is an extraordinary survivor from the golden age of Madeira. Produced in the late nineteenth century and matured slowly in cask for well over a century before bottling, it represents one of the rarest and most historically significant wines still available from the island.
Verdelho occupies the classic middle ground in the traditional Madeira styles — richer than Sercial yet drier than Bual — and with extreme age it develops remarkable depth and complexity while retaining the vibrant acidity for which Madeira is renowned.
In the glass the wine shows a deep amber colour with olive and green reflections, a hallmark of extremely long oxidative ageing. The nose is immediately complex and layered, offering aromas of candied citrus peel, roasted walnut, antique wood and polished spice, alongside notes of burnt orange, honeyed almonds and dried fig. With time in the glass further nuances appear — hints of tobacco leaf, old varnish, dark caramel and exotic spice.
On the palate the wine is intensely concentrated yet remarkably vibrant. Flavours of orange marmalade, roasted nuts, dried apricot and caramelised citrus unfold in layers, supported by the piercing acidity that allows Madeira to age seemingly indefinitely. The Verdelho style provides a beautiful balance between richness and freshness, giving the wine both structure and elegance.
The finish is extraordinarily long, leaving lingering impressions of spiced orange, toasted almond, old wood and gentle smoke that persist for minutes.
After more than a century of maturation in cask, the D’Oliveiras 1890 Verdelho Madeira is not simply a wine but a piece of history — a testament to the durability and unique ageing potential of Madeira.
Serving suggestion: Madeira does not require decanting and can be enjoyed immediately. Serve lightly cool in a small glass and allow time for the extraordinary complexity to unfold.
Drink Window: effectively indefinite once bottled and opened.

"The 1890 Verdelho has an elegant, refined bouquet that is pure and seductive. It offers precise aromas of orange peel, tangerine, dried honey and wax resin with great delineation. The palate is very well-balanced with impressive clarity and poise. It builds nicely in the mouth with tangy, oxidative notes that are perfectly in tune with the sweetness. This illustrates just how well Verdelho ages over decades. This is a stunning 122-year-old Madeira." The Wine Advocate
