Description
1955 Delor Négociants Sauternes
Overview:
A rare and evocative example of mature post-war Sauternes, the 1955 Delor Négociants reflects the traditional Bordeaux négociant style of the era, offering evolved honeyed richness, deep tertiary complexity and remarkable historical charm. Well-preserved bottles provide a fascinating insight into mid-century sweet Bordeaux and the enduring longevity of botrytised wines.
Appearance:
Deep amber-gold with mahogany and burnished copper reflections, showing pronounced maturity and concentration developed over decades in bottle.
Nose:
Highly evolved and richly aromatic, revealing layers of orange marmalade, dried apricot, honeycomb and caramelised citrus peel. With air, further complexity emerges through notes of walnut, beeswax, saffron, antique wood and soft exotic spice, alongside subtle oxidative nuances typical of very mature Sauternes.
Palate:
Silky, mellow and deeply tertiary in character, with flavours of candied orange, baked apricot and dried fig supported by notes of toffee, roasted nuts and gentle caramel. The sweetness remains balanced by preserved acidity, giving the wine lift and freshness despite its considerable age, while the mature botrytis character contributes texture, savoury nuance and layered complexity.
Finish:
Long, warming and beautifully evolved, lingering through marmalade, honeyed fruits, soft spice and delicate oxidative notes.
About the Wine:
Delor Négociants was one of Bordeaux’s historic wine merchants and négociant houses, known for sourcing and bottling wines from across the region during the mid-20th century. Mature bottlings such as this 1955 Sauternes represent a traditional era of Bordeaux wine trade, where long ageing and classical winemaking styles produced wines of remarkable longevity and character when properly stored.
