Donnaz, 1976 — Caves Coopératives de Donnaz
This mature Donnaz comes from the Caves Coopératives de Donnaz in the Valle d’Aosta, a region renowned for its steep alpine vineyards and traditionally crafted Nebbiolo-based wines (locally known as Picotendro). The wine shows a garnet-red colour with brick-orange highlights, reflecting nearly five decades of careful ageing. On the nose, it reveals delicate aromas of dried red berries, rose petal, alpine herbs, leather, and subtle mineral notes reminiscent of mountain stone and forest floor.
On the palate, the wine is refined and graceful, with softened tannins supporting flavours of sour cherry, cranberry, gentle spice, and a touch of dried orange peel. A distinct savoury, mineral thread runs through the wine, leading to a long, elegant, and slightly earthy finish. This is a classic expression of mature Donnaz — structured yet delicate, shaped by its unique alpine terroir.
Decanting: Stand the bottle upright for 2–3 days prior to opening to allow any sediment to settle. Decant slowly and carefully through a fine strainer, allowing 1–2 hours of gentle aeration before serving at 16–18°C. A fragile cork is very common with older bottles, where the wine has been in prolonged contact with the cork over many decades. We therefore recommend straining any cork fragments during the decanting process.
