Description

1980 Dow's Vintage Port

Overview:

The 1980 Dow's Vintage Port comes from a classic Douro house renowned for producing some of the most structured and long-lived Vintage Ports. While overshadowed by a number of legendary declarations on either side of it, the 1980 vintage has matured gracefully over more than four decades, developing the savoury complexity and refined character that are hallmarks of mature Dow's.

Appearance:

Deep garnet in colour with brick-red highlights at the rim, showing mature development while retaining impressive depth.

Nose:

Expressive and complex, offering aromas of dried blackberry, black cherry and plum, layered with notes of walnut, fig and dark chocolate. Hints of cedar, spice and subtle balsamic tones develop with aeration, adding further depth and complexity.

Palate:

Rich and harmonious, with fully integrated tannins and a velvety texture. Flavours of dried black fruits, dates and raisined berries are supported by notes of cocoa, spice and roasted nuts. Dow's characteristic restraint and structure remain evident, balancing the sweetness and providing freshness through the finish.

Finish:

Long, smooth and persistent, with lingering notes of dark fruit, chocolate, spice and gentle nutty complexity.

Decanting:

Stand upright for 3–7 days prior to opening to allow sediment to settle. Decant carefully through a fine strainer immediately before serving at 16–18°C. Fragile corks are common with Vintage Ports of this age; any cork fragments should be removed during decanting.

About the Producer:

Dow's is one of the Douro Valley's most respected Port houses, with a history dating back to the eighteenth century. Renowned for producing Vintage Ports of structure, balance and longevity, the house style is typically drier and more restrained than many of its peers, allowing the fruit, minerality and ageing potential of the wine to shine through over decades of bottle maturation.
