Description
The 1985 Dow’s Vintage Port is a standout from a highly successful declared vintage, offering classic structure, depth, and longevity. Dow’s is known for its drier, firmer house style—built more for endurance than immediate opulence—and in 1985, this translated into a wine of superb ageing potential and quiet power. Now with nearly 40 years in bottle, the 1985 Dow is maturing beautifully, combining layered fruit with savoury complexity.
The nose is mature yet vigorous, opening with aromas of black plum, dried fig, and cassis, followed by notes of roasted coffee bean, cedar, tobacco leaf, and dark chocolate. With air, subtle herbal and nutty nuances emerge—hazelnut, leather, and a touch of eucalyptus—adding refinement to the wine’s bold character.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, with well-knit tannins and vibrant acidity that have preserved the wine’s balance and freshness over time. Flavours of damson, black cherry, and dates unfold slowly, giving way to earthy spice, liquorice, and hints of toasted almond. The finish is long, savoury, and persistent—less sweet than some contemporaries, but every bit as satisfying in depth and complexity.
Now at its peak and offering excellent drinking, the 1985 Dow’s will continue to hold well into the 2030s. Decant for at least two hours to allow the full aromatic profile to emerge and to remove sediment. A superb match for blue cheeses, nutty desserts, or as a contemplative end to a fine meal.
