1976 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port

A beautifully mature Vintage Port from Fonseca’s Guimaraens label, the 1976 vintage has evolved into a wonderfully refined and expressive wine. Produced in years when a full Fonseca declaration was not made, Guimaraens Vintage Ports are renowned for offering excellent ageing potential while displaying the rich, opulent house style associated with Fonseca.

Now fully mature, the wine opens with complex aromas of dried black fruits, figs, walnut, cocoa, spice and cedarwood, layered with notes of tobacco leaf, leather and dark chocolate. With time in the glass, subtle hints of orange peel and earthy minerality emerge, adding further depth and elegance.

The palate is smooth, harmonious and beautifully integrated, with softened tannins supporting flavours of raisin, cassis, dried cherry, mocha and gentle spice. Despite its age, the wine retains impressive freshness and structure, leading into a long, warming and persistent finish.

The 1976 vintage produced approachable yet long-lived Ports, and this mature Guimaraens now offers an excellent opportunity to experience a fully evolved classic Vintage Port at its peak.

Serve at 16–18°C and decant carefully to remove sediment. An excellent accompaniment to blue cheese, dark chocolate desserts or walnuts, though equally rewarding enjoyed slowly on its own.

Fonseca is one of the Douro’s most celebrated Port houses, famous for producing rich, powerful and long-lived Vintage Ports. The Guimaraens label, named after the family connected with the house for generations, is reserved for selected years that showcase Fonseca’s distinctive style in a slightly earlier-drinking expression.
