Description
The 2000 Fonseca Vintage Port is a benchmark declaration from one of the Douro’s most opulent houses, combining richness, aromatic lift and serious longevity. A superb choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Drink now or cellar for further complexity – ideal from now through 2055/2060+.
Tasting Notes:
Opaque garnet-purple with classic Fonseca aromatics: blackberry and black cherry, plum compote, violet and rose petal, mint/eucalyptus, liquorice and cocoa. The palate is full-bodied and layered, with dark fruit, spice and chocolate framed by ripe, polished tannins. Excellent concentration, balanced sweetness and vibrant acidity drive a long, beautifully woven finish.
Serving Tips & Storage Decant gently and allow 4–6 hours to open. Serve at 16–18 °C on its own or with steak and blue-cheese sauce, game dishes, mature blue cheeses (Stilton, Roquefort, Gorgonzola) or high-cacao artisan chocolate. Once opened, enjoy over 24–48 hours. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place away from vibration and heat.
Fonseca (founded 1815) is renowned for Vintage Ports of exotic richness and longevity. Drawing fruit from prized Cima Corgo and Douro Superior vineyards (including flagship estates such as Panascal), the house style marries hedonistic fruit with structure and finesse – a signature clearly on display in the outstanding 2000 vintage.

"The millennial Fonseca is still a young pup. It has a rich blackberry, cassis and liquorice-scented nose with a touch of saddle-leather, fruitcake and earth. The palate has a sensuous entry, beautifully integrated tannins, seamless and caressing with blackberry, black olive compote, fig and a touch of damson jam. Lovely sense of natural balance and poise but yet to shed its puppy fat. Quintessenital Fonseca really. Drink 2020-2050+ Tasted May 2009." Neil Martin, Wine Journal 2009.
*** 95 Points Robert Parker ***
"Dense ruby/purple-colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits, flowers, incense, and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one of the most concentrated of the vintage. Sweet, expansive, and succulent, this large-scaled, but remarkably well-balanced effort is surprisingly forward and accessible (by Fonseca's standards). Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 2002.
