1977 Freisa – Contratto (Piedmont)

Freisa is one of Piedmont’s traditional indigenous varieties, historically grown alongside Nebbiolo and known for its firm structure and aromatic lift. The 1977 vintage produced classically styled wines in the region, and this bottling from Contratto — founded in 1867 and long associated with traditional Piedmontese winemaking — reflects a more historic era of regional production, where patience and extended ageing shaped the wine’s evolution.

Tasting Notes:
Now showing a mature brick-red hue with garnet reflections at the rim, the nose is savoury and gently evolved. Aromas of dried red cherry, cranberry and rose petal mingle with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and earthy spice. With time in the glass, subtle hints of dried herbs and forest floor emerge. On the palate it is medium-bodied, with softened tannins and a lively acidity typical of Freisa that preserves freshness despite its age. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and light balsamic nuances unfold gradually, leading to a smooth, elegant and gently persistent finish.

Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. A fine companion to braised meats, game dishes, mushroom risotto or mature hard cheeses.

Summary:
